Madrid, liquor and tradition

We are back with our section of traditional liqueurs from the different communities of Spain. As experts in glass bottles for liquor, we have already selected the most typical spirits from the Comunidad Valenciana, Galicia and Cataluña.

This time is the turn of Comunidad de Madrid. Spain’s most famous dishes are typical of this región: potato omelette and squid sandwich. Cocido, callos and torrija cannot be missing from the list of Madrilenian traditions. Alongside these exquisite dishes and desserts, there is a list of a wide variety of liqueurs. Anyone visiting the Madrid region is obliged to try these liqueurs.

Chinchón

The liquor par excellence of the Comunidad de Madrid. Chinchón is an aniseed drink produced in the town for which it is named, Chinchón. It is made from matalahúva, aniseed or green aniseed. This grain is placed in a solution of alcohol of agricultural origin and of medium alcoholic strength. This mix is left to macerate for 12 to 14 hours.

There are four different varieties of chinchón, depending on the alcoholic strength. From lowest to highest: sweet chinchón (between 35 and 40 degrees), dry chinchón (between 40 and 50 degrees) and extra dry chinchón with 74 degrees. All of them have their own Denomination of Origin. Licor de Madroño

Another traditional liquor from Madrid is licor de Madroño. This drink is made from the iconic fruit of Madri, el madroño. This fruit comes from the tree known as Arbutus Unedo. This means “tree of which only one fruit is to be eaten”. The most striking feature of the Madroño tree is that their sugars have a natural fermentation process.

It is made using aniseed or sweet marc, cinnamon and honey. It is therefore a liqueur with a sweet taste. In the Vitroval catalogue you will find specific bottles for these two liqueurs.
