Canary Islands, Liquor, and Tradition

This month we return with the “Liquors and Tradition” section, where we discuss the typical liquors of each autonomous community. After focusing on the Valencian Community, Galicia, Catalonia, and Madrid, it’s now the turn of the Canary Islands. Ronmiel

This is the quintessential Canarian liquor. The Canary Islands are the cradle of rum, as sugar cane brought by the conquistadors to the Caribbean originally came from this region. Canarian ronmiel has had a Specific Geographic Denomination since 2005 and is made from a blend of rum, sugar cane spirit, and honey. It has a smooth, sweet taste, making it the ideal conclusion to large meals. Although its tradition spans all of the Canary Islands, the municipality of Arucas, north of Gran Canaria, is famously known as the City of Ronmiel.

Gomerón

Just as the Canary Islands share common traditions and culture, each island also has its distinctive products. One of the most renowned liquors in this community is Gomerón, originating from the island of La Gomera. Gomerón is made from a mix of palm honey and grape spirit. Palm honey is a traditional Canarian product that forms the basis of numerous culinary preparations. Gomerón is typically consumed as an aperitif after meals.

Mejunje

This liquor, typical of Tirajana (Gran Canaria), is made from a blend of rum, honey, sugar, and lemons. Originally prepared at home in Canarian households, over time it has become commercially available in bars, now marketed under its own brand and liquor bottle.
