Glass is a highly fragile material. When transporting any product made of glass, it is essential to have strong palletization.

At Vitroval, we are distributors of glass packaging, and we understand that one of our clients’ main concerns is the palletization of their glass bottles or jars. This concern arises from the fragility of the material and the multiple processes the products will undergo at the packaging or bottling facility.

Factors to consider when buying glass packaging

  • Pallet Height. Height is crucial. If the pallet is too high, there’s a significant risk of it falling or causing transport issues. Moreover, excessively tall pallets complicate depalletization. At Vitroval, we typically use stackable pallets. This means instead of one tall pallet, we split products onto two shorter pallets.
  • Types of Separators.Separators can be cardboard trays or plastic separators. If using plastic separators, it’s important to determine if they are returnable or incur an additional cost. Regarding trays, they can have raised edges upwards, downwards, or be simple cardboard separators. Choose according to your depalletization method.
  • Properly Wrapped Pallets. This factor is vital. Containers must be thoroughly sealed since they’re intended for food use and must reach the consumer in optimal condition.

Types of pallets based on size and composition

  • European Pallet. It measures 1200x800mm. It serves as the primary support to facilitate the flow and grouping of goods during transportation and storage.
  • American Pallet. This type measures 1200x1000mm and is also known as a universal or iso-pallet. It’s widely used in the glass industry and is even called a “glass pallet.” At Vitroval, we typically use American pallets.

When purchasing our glass containers, the minimum order managed is one pallet. If you request a full truck, the number of tall American pallets will be 26. For a 40-foot container, there will be 21 pallets. Remember, if pallets are stackable, the pallet quantity doubles.
